Sealing oils

Hair oils.
Oil seals moisture in. It does not add it.

This is the distinction that decides whether an oil helps or makes things worse. Used on hair that has just had a leave-in or a mask, an oil locks that moisture in and the hair stays soft. Used alone on hair that is already dry, it seals the dryness in and the hair feels coated but no better. Order matters more than which oil you pick.

Getting oil right

Almost every complaint about hair oil is a dosage or order problem.

1

Moisture first, oil second

A leave-in, a mask or at minimum damp hair. Oil on bone-dry hair seals in the state it finds.

2

Two or three drops

Warmed between the palms, ends first. For most hair that is the whole amount; long or very coarse hair may take double.

3

Never at the roots

The scalp makes its own oil. Adding more is how roots end up greasy while the ends stay dry.

About this collection

Oil does something no conditioner can: it seals. After moisture is in the hair, a thin layer of oil on the outside slows how fast it escapes, which is why oil is always the last step rather than the first. The range here runs from light argan and keratin blends for fine hair to butter cream and multi-oil formulas for coarse, thick or very dry lengths.

Two or three drops, warmed between the palms, applied to the mid-lengths and ends of damp hair. Roots are already oily enough. Used this way, a bottle lasts months and replaces a whole conditioning step on days when there is no time. On dry hair, the same few drops tame flyaways and add shine without a wash.

Frequently asked questions

Does hair oil help hair grow?

Indirectly, and it is worth being clear about which part is real. Oil does not speed up the follicle. What it does is cut breakage at the ends, so hair reaches a longer length before it snaps — which looks like faster growth. Scalp massage while applying it does improve circulation to the follicle.

How do I use hair oil without greasy roots?

Two or three drops warmed in your palms, applied to the bottom two-thirds only, on damp or dry hair. If you are oiling the scalp deliberately, do it as a pre-wash treatment and shampoo it out.

Should I use hair oil on wet or dry hair?

Damp hair for smoothing and frizz control — the oil seals in the water already there. Dry hair for shine and taming flyaways, using less. Both work; the amount is what changes.

Can I use hair oil every day?

Yes, on the ends. Daily scalp oiling is only for dry scalps and should be washed out, since oil left sitting on the scalp can trap flakes and build-up.
