What is actually in it

Most sea salt sprays are water, salt and a hold polymer. Read the full list on this one and there is more going on. Sodium chloride sits second, so the salt is not a trace amount; VP/VA copolymer sits third and is the film former that holds the shape you scrunch in. After that come three hydrolysed proteins — corn, wheat and soy — four seaweed extracts (Codium tomentosum, Ecklonia cava, Gelidium cartilagineum, Hizikia fusiforme) and five mineral ferments carrying copper, iron, magnesium, silicon and zinc.

Glycerin, propylene glycol and butylene glycol are in there as humectants. That combination is the point: salt pulls moisture out of the strand, and those are what stop the finish going brittle. There are no silicones in the formula.

This one or the Ossion version?

The formula is the same. Ingredients one through twenty-nine are identical on both labels — same salt level, same copolymer, same proteins, seaweeds and ferments. What differs is the scent. This version leans lighter and greener, and shares the bitter orange and lemon peel oils that sit on top of both. The Ossion Sea Salt Spray takes the same base and finishes it with cedarwood and patchouli for the barber line.

How to use

Shake. Mist over damp hair from roots to ends, concentrating on the mid-lengths, then scrunch with your hands and leave it to dry. Two to four passes for loose movement on fine hair, more for a defined wave on thicker hair. Works on natural curl as well — it adds grip without setting the curl hard.

Sea salt spray questions

Do you put sea salt spray on wet or dry hair? Damp is where it works best — towel-dried, not dripping. On soaking hair the salt dilutes and the VP/VA copolymer cannot form a film, so you lose the grip. On bone-dry hair you get texture but less shape.

Is salt spray damaging for hair? Salt draws moisture out, which is why a spray that is only salt and water leaves hair feeling like straw. This one carries glycerin, propylene glycol and butylene glycol as humectants plus three hydrolysed proteins, which is what keeps the texture from turning brittle. It still is not a leave-in conditioner: if your hair is already dry, use it on the mid-lengths and follow with a leave-in.

Should you use it before or after other products? First, on damp hair, before cream or oil. Anything with a film or an oil on it coats the strand and the salt then has nothing to grip.

How do you get the most texture out of it? Spray in sections, scrunch with your hands rather than combing, and let it air-dry or rough-dry on low. Brushing it out afterwards removes the grit you just built.
